(Chris Kadooka photo)

In the earliest and perhaps most exciting regular season opener in recent University of Hawai’i men’s basketball history, Jaden Matingou drained a fadeway jumper from about 15 feet just inside the right elbow with 1.2 seconds remaining Monday night to lift the Warriors to a pulsating 74-73 over visiting Seattle U.

A lively and vocal crowd of 2,778 in BankOh Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center watched UH blow an earlier 16-point lead before the game-winner by Matingou, a 6-foot senior guard who scored a team-high 20 points and added three rebounds and one assist. The Redhawks, who went 21-14 last season and advanced to the second round of the NIT, were led by Will Heimbrodt and Mason Williams, who notched 20 points each.

With Seattle leading 73-72, Heimbrodt missed two free throws with 13 seconds remaining, and Zack Davidson grabbed the rebound to give Hawai’i possession. The Warriors advanced the ball to past halfcourt and called timeout with 10.4 seconds left. After receiving the inbounds pass near the top of the key, Matingou dribbled right past an on-ball screen by Bol Dengdit and then penetrated the lane. After being stopped near the basket, he retreated a couple of steps and then launched his fadeaway jumper from just inside the right elbow. It nestled into the net and the Redhawks immediately called timeout with 1.2 ticks on the clock.

Marcus Admas, Jr. then intercepted the ensuing inbounds pass near halfcourt and spiked the ball after time expired, setting off an oncourt celebration as fans cheered on.

“When you think about the circumstances we’ve been dealing with, the passion we played with, and the team we did it against — and obviously the moment at the end — it’s gotta be right up there,” UH coach Eran Ganot said. “When you live long enough, you relish opportunities to see people smile, obviously starting with our student-athletes and our coaches, and then looking out into the fans … this was a community win. This was a completely new team on the floor today, and to play like they did, navigating whether it was foul trouble, depth, fatigue … and that’s a really good team we played.

“I think we certainly set the tone with our passion, and maybe some of that went away, give (Seattle) credit. But we were our calmest, and our most clutch at the most important time. It probably just came down to having the ball at the end. For all those reasons, it’s a really proud moment.”

More details to some.

In the earliest and perhaps most exciting regular season opener in recent University of Hawai’i men’s basketball history, Jaden Matingou drained a fadeway jumper from about 15 feet just inside the right elbow with 1.2 seconds remaining Monday night to lift the Warriors to a pulsating 74-73 over visiting Seattle […]

[1
