Coaches vs. Cancer event kicks off ’24 DHC

The eighth Coaches Versus Cancer dinner event, which helps raise funds for the Clarence T.C. Ching Hope Lodge, is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20 at Kani Ka Pila Grille in the Outrigger Reef Hotel.

In the ultra-competitive world of college basketball, there is one common opponent among all 300-plus NCAA Division I programs. Coaches vs. Cancer, a nationwide organization, will be featured on the local level at 7 p.m. Friday with dinner and fellowship at Kani Ka Pila Grille in the Outrigger Reef Hotel.

All eight schools participating in this coming week’s Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic will be represented, led by Hawai’i head coach Eran Ganot.

“We love annual events, and to see things grow over the years … I think it’s become a national staple,” said Ganot, who sits on the board of the Coaches vs. Cancer Council, under the umbrella of the American Cancer Society. “We always want to do our part here in Hawai’i, to help the greater good. The money (raised) stays right here at the (Clarence T.C. Ching) Hope Lodge, there’s only 31 or 32 in the country.

“We want to continue to educate our guys on how important it is. Obviously all of us have been impacted by this dreadful disease, directly or indirectly.”
